Have you seen DIY kitchen makeovers on the internet?

Well, then maybe it piqued your interest — and maybe now you’re thinking about trying it on your own.

It might look so simple watching other people do it but it can probably be a complicated task if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Fortunately, we are here to the rescue! We can give you some awesome tips and tricks that you use in redesigning your home cabinet.

So without further ado, here they are:

  1. It’s best to paint wood surfaces

Paint can work well on any type or condition of wood — stained, painted, unfinished. In fact, any kind of material that you can use sandpaper on to make the paint adhere better is a viable option.

With that said, you can’t paint laminates because the paint won’t last long on their surface.

You also need to remember that glossy finishes or stained wood need to be de-glossed first. You might want to try a liquid sander to do that.

  1. Preparation is important

Remember that the preparation is as essential as the painting process. You might want to start by emptying and cleaning all the cabinets thoroughly. Make sure that every dirt and grease is gone on every surface.

Remove their handles, knobs and check their hinges. When removing the drawers, it’s probably best that you label them so you’ll know their proper place later.

Put tapes on every part that should be paint-free link hinges, appliances, and countertops.

Noticed some imperfections or holes? You can use a wood filler to quickly fix them.

And lastly, sand cabinets. Use rotary sanders on flat areas and hand sand those parts that can’t be reached by your machine. Don’t forget the door edges.

Are your cabinets stained? If so, then use the 220 sandpaper.

If the cabinet is painted and has an orange peel-like rough stipple, you can utilize the 120 sandpaper before using a finer one.

Does the surface look like crocodile skin? If it does, you might want to strip it.

  1. Primer is necessary

After preparing your cabinets for the paint job that you’re about to do, it’s crucial that you apply primer on them.

No matter what happens, you apparently need to avoid all-in-one primer or other paint products that claim to have everything — they usually don’t do the job very well.

The best product that you can use is an oil primer because it can provide you long-lasting results.

However, it’s not available in most states because of VOCs.

Fortunately, you can use an alternative like water-soluble waterborne paint. Take note that this dries quickly, so it might be better to mix some extender to achieve a nice finish.
